Lingua Medica was set up
in 1988 in the Department of Reproductive Physiology at
St
Bartholomew’s Hospital, London (Barts Hospital), the oldest hospital in London, with the blessing of Professor
Tim Chard, who combined leadership of a world-class
radioimmunoassay unit with an uncommon ability for writing lucid
scientific English and encouraging that talent in others.
The setting was tailor-made for medical translation. Not only was
the Department itself producing research papers at an astonishing
rate –
Tim Chard alone being responsible for over 500 – but it
drew a constant supply of postdocs from all over the world who
later returned home to head departments of their own and needed
help in translating and revising their work. It also had close
links with the research departments of major European drug
companies, as well as running novel ventures of its own. Within a
couple of years, Lingua Medica had a range of academic and
industry clients who have stayed with it ever since.
A university hospital is the perfect environment for producing
informed translation and editing of material covering every
specialty catered for on its campus. Even in the Internet era,
Lingua Medica’s ability to access field-leader expertise that is on-site,
hands-on and human gives it an unmatchable edge over other medical translation.
